AFAP – As fast as possible swimming. When you get to the end of the swim, you should not be able to talk because you’ll be breathing very hard.
Base – Swimming at a pace that is consistent for a significant period of time. For example: swimming 10 x 100 on a 1:30 interval and getting 5-10 seconds rest for each swim. The term base is frequently used to calculate longer swims. The same swimmer who can do 10 x 100 @ 1:30, should be able to swim 5 x 200 @ 3:00, or 400 @ 6:00, etc.
Brute Squad – An event that usually occurs in November or December where swimmers are asked to swim a 200 yard Butterfly, a 400 yard Individual Medley, and a 1650 yard Freestyle. The swimmer can take as much rest between each swim as they desire, and they may do the three swims in any order.
Build-Up – Swimming progressively faster throughout the swim.
Circle Swimming – The process of swimming down the right side of the lane, with the black line on the bottom of the pool to your left at all times. This is the standard that Loveland Masters uses at all practice sessions.
Cool Down – The period before you get out of the pool that is relaxed swimming. A great cool down set is 4 x 50 with an increase in the amount of rest between each 50, and a decreasing stroke count for each 50.
DPS – Distance Per Stroke, a drill in which the swimmer is to stretch out the stroke with the goal of having a lower than normal stroke count.
EZ – Swim in a relaxed pace, considered active recovery.
Individual Medley (IM) – Swimming a distance comprised equally of Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. A 75 IM, there would be no Freestyle leg
Interval – A set amount of time in which to complete a series of swims. For example: 10 x 50 at 1:00. This means every 1 minute the swimmer will depart for another 50 yard swim. If the swimmer completes the swim in :40, then they will get :20 rest. If they complete the swim in :35 they will get :25 rest. The goal is to keep each swim as consistent as possible.
Leave on the Top – means to depart for the next swim on the :00 on the clock.
Leave on the Bottom – means to depart for the next swim on the :30 on the clock.
Moderate – Swimming at a moderate pace. A bit faster than EZ, but not as fast as Base or AFAP.
Negative Split – Complete the second half of a prescribed swim faster than the first half. For example: 200 negative split if the swimmer completes the first half in 1:30, and the second half in 1:25, this would be a negative split.
Odd Way – Swimming stroke/non-Freestyle for the first 25 of a distance, and swimming Freestyle for the second 25 of the distance. A 150 odd way would be 25 Butterfly, 25 Freestyle, 25 Backstroke, 25 Freestyle, 25 Breaststroke, 25 Freestyle.
SKOB – Streamline Kick on Back
Smooth – focusing on long fluid strokes
Stroke – Do any of the following strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke. Generally means to swim something other than Freestyle.
Stroke Count – Counting each time the each hand enters the water for a stroke.
Swim Golf –A game in which the swimmer is to keep track of both stroke count and time during a prescribed swim — generally not longer than 50 yards. The goal of the game is to have a consistently low overall stroke count and time combined number.
